What is Electroacupuncture?
Electroacupuncture is a modified form of traditional acupuncture that incorporates the use of electrical stimulation. It involves the insertion of acupuncture needles into specific points on the body, just like in traditional acupuncture, and then a small, low-frequency electrical current is applied to these needles. This added electrical stimulation is intended to enhance the therapeutic effects of the acupuncture treatment.
Electroacupuncture machines are connected to the needles via small alligator clips or electrodes. These machines can control the frequency, intensity, and duration of the electrical current. Low-frequency electrical pulses are applied to the needles, creating a mild tingling or pulsing sensation.
The acupuncturist can adjust the electrical stimulation parameters to customize the treatment for the individual patient. The sensation is comfortable and not painful. The effect from this can be exponential, especially when followed in a treatment program which involves serial visits over time. It stimulates the body to produce "feel-good" chemicals called neurotransmitters which reduce pain and allow the body to heal.
